Formosa 4 Offshore Wind Farm

Formosa 4

Formosa 4 Offshore Wind Farm is a large-scale project jointly invested and developed by Synera Renewable Energy (SRE) and the other members of the “Taiwan Team.” With a maximum installed capacity of 1,104 MW, the wind farm will be located 18 to 20 kilometers off the coast of Tongxiao Township, Miaoli County in northwestern Taiwan.

After taking part in the development and construction of Formosa 1, Taiwan’s first commercial-scale offshore wind farm, and Formosa 2, SRE has greater confidence in the potential of offshore wind power in the Taiwan Strait. To expand the domestic portfolio, SRE announced in September 2020 the large-scale Formosa 4 which, at the end of December 2022, was awarded 495 MW of development capacity by the Ministry of Economic Affairs.

Formosa 4 is the first offshore wind project developed solely by a local team since Taiwan commercialized offshore wind. Through collaboration among industry partners, the team brings together expertise in development, manufacturing, technology, construction, and O&M, striving to bolster Taiwan’s ability to develop offshore wind power independently and localize the supply chain. The shared goal is to drive Taiwan’s offshore wind industry to the next level and accelerate the energy transition.

Wind turbines with rated power of 14 MW or 15 MW are planned for Formosa 4. When completed and in commercial operation, Formosa 4 is expected to meet the energy needs of over 500,000 households.
