Formosa 2 marks the first Round 2 offshore wind farm completed in Taiwan and continues to build a greener future

Taipei, May 16, 2023 – Formosa 2 offshore wind project marks a significant milestone as the first Round 2 offshore wind farm, and the first to be completed after the pandemic in Taiwan, and today (16) held an inauguration ceremony at the Waipu Fishing Port in Miaoli to celebrate the successful construction of the offshore wind farm. With all 47 wind turbine generators (WTGs) installed earlier this year and connected to the grid in March, Formosa 2 is stepping into the operational stage and is fully equipped to supply 376MW of clean energy, supporting Taiwan's green energy transition.

Despite difficult and challenging weather conditions in winter, Formosa 2 successfully installed all 47 x 8MW Siemens Gamesa WTGs on 31 January. By March, all WTGs were commissioned to the grid. Last month, Formosa 2 generated its full capacity of 376MW of clean energy for the first time since it was built. Formosa 2 has been officially inaugurated after all testing work has been settled.

Lucas Lin, Chairman of Synera Renewable Energy said, "Formosa 2 is the second offshore wind project we participated in and delivered in Taiwan. With strong support from Stonepeak, we have fully taken our responsibilities as a local developer and played a critical role in pushing forward the project. This hard-won achievement demonstrates our firm commitment to Taiwan’s energy transition and once again strengthens our leading position in the offshore wind market in Asia. We aspire to carry the momentum forward into our neighboring countries, hoping that we can also help the region to achieve net zero. "

Formosa 2 is a joint development project by JERA (49%), Macquarie Asset Management’s Green Investment Group (26%), and Synera Renewable Energy (25%). GIG is supported by its portfolio company, Corio Generation.

Formosa 2 has been dedicated to bringing benefits to the local supply chain and supporting jobs in the offshore wind industry from the very beginning. In addition to its collaboration with the National United University in Miaoli, Formosa 2 has also held an art competition to expand green energy education to local middle and elementary schools, laying a solid foundation for future green talent.

Located between 4 to 10 kilometers off the coast of Zhunan Township, Miaoli County, the wind farm has an installed capacity of 376MW and will generate enough electricity to power the equivalent of approximately 380,000 households, reducing carbon emissions by 700,000 tons per year.
