Formosa 4 awarded development capacity for Phase 3 Zonal Development

Calls for early promulgation of rules for the second round of auction

Taipei, January 12, 2023 – Synera Renewable Energy (“SRE”) announced that the Formosa 4 Offshore Wind Project (“Formosa 4”) has been allocated 495 MW of development capacity by the Ministry of Economic Affairs in the first round of auction for Phase 3 Zonal Development of Offshore Wind.

SRE hopes that the new administrative contract that is still under intensive negotiation between the government and selected developers will soon be finalized and promulgated. As to the administrative contract for the second round of auction in 2023, SRE would like to call on the competent authority to thoroughly discuss the contract with offshore wind companies and finalize it before the announcement of the bidding and selection rules. It is hoped that there will be at least six months of preparation time for developers to carry out the bid evaluation and resource planning properly.

Lucas Lin, the chairperson of SRE, stated, “We deeply appreciate all the support received from scholars, experts, supply chain partners, and the community in Miaoli County. Taiwan has some of the best offshore wind resources in the world. Over the past decade, our team has accumulated rich local experience in development, construction, and operations and maintenance (“O&M”) through the demonstration phase and potential site phase. Our team is looking forward to putting the experiences and lessons to good use in Formosa 4 and other offshore wind projects.”

He added, “The recognition Formosa 4 earns has a massive impact on our corporate development and encourages us to prepare for the next round of auction more actively. It unfolds a new journey, and we believe that we can further expand offshore wind power, gather and integrate resources, and attract more green-collar talents to facilitate the development of renewable energy in Taiwan and across Asia.”

SRE is also currently in the process of developing Formosa 5, which will be adjacent to Formosa 4 and is the only floating offshore wind farm that has passed the preliminary EIA review. Together, Formosa 4 and 5 are expected to power millions of homes in Taiwan once they commence commercial operations.

SRE has dedicated itself to developing offshore wind power since 2012 and has participated in the planning, construction, and O&M of Taiwan’s first offshore wind farm. SRE also works on Formosa 2, another offshore wind project that is located off the coast of Miaoli County and has a total installed capacity of 376 MW which has been making steady progress.
